Environmental Policies
This issue is at the very core of Realm's existence.
Every step we take now, both internally and externally, profoundly effects every step we'll take down the road. We don't make a move without considering the impact.
Resource Procurement Program
- Each project goes through a rigorous review session in an effort to minimize our carbon footprint.
- We source local and regional materials to reduce the amount of fossil fuel and energy required for freight.
- We take sourcing seriously and spend countless hours researching current sustainability offerings to stay ahead of the curve.
- We specify renewable, recycled an reclaimed materials where feasible, reducing our reliance on non-sustainable products.
- All material by-products and overage make their way back to our yard for repurposing. Items not slated for reuse are donated to local organizations. Any material waste not reused is strictly handled according to state mandated waste management rules and regulations.
Sustainability Initiative
How business behaves, matters. We have no interest in furthering our bottom line if it means compromising our mission. We have
responsibilities and we have commitments. But we have the wherewithal to make positive change a reality. To sit by idly would be unconscionable.
At Realm™, we’re big believers in that most logical of maxims, “actions speak louder than words”. That’s why we’re so focused on our own internal conduct. We’re a small group of dedicated people focused on the big picture. The only way to live in a healthier world is to create one.
Here are just a few of the internal efforts we’ve launched:
- Solar panels on trucks
- Solar panels being installed at warehouse in 2010
- Green uniform service
- In-house recycle program (paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, metal)
- Paperless billing and online bill pay
- Toner/ink cartridge recycle program
- Plant material salvage and recycle program
- All POS printed on recycled/recyclable papers with soy inks
- Bio-fuels for all diesel vehicles (en route to a non-Ethanol-based Bio-diesel system)
- Electric tools to replace gas-powered tools
- Time off allowed/promoted for environmental action ventures
- 2007 forward – alternative fuel vehicle commitment (VPP: Vehicle Procurement Philosophy)
- Sustainable office building materials (tank-less hot water heater, non-VOC paint, non-adhesive carpet tiles, etc.)
- 100% recycled paper for office use
- The reuse of spent office supplies for use as internal notepads
- IRS tax benefit to offset the costs of cycling to work (we have several employees who reduce emissions by biking to work every day)
- We use compact fluorescents bulbs, turn off the lights on sunny days (we installed skylights for that reason), and turn off all computers and lights before we leave at night.
- 100% of inter-office communications are emailed
- Cleaning crew using 100% organic, biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products
- Light sensors in facility to minimize energy usage
- Reduction of cooling costs and energy usage (e.g: modifying thermostat settings by 2-4 degrees during the day and auto-programming to switch the units off overnight).
