Prune deciduous trees & shrubs:

• Thin the crown (never more than 20% at a time) to allow air and light to pass through
• Remove dead and diseased branches to reduce pest and pathogen potential
• Remove crossing branches
• Prune for pedestrian and vehicular clearance

And remember...you can't un-prune a tree - look twice...cut once!
